How to review a customer's BJJ sparring footage

A useful review helps a practitioner understand their round and choose what to work on next. As the reviewer, connect your observations to specific moments and give the customer a clear, manageable next step.

Start with the customer’s question

Confirm which practitioner is the customer and read the question they want answered. Consider any training context they provide. If their identity or question is unclear, ask for clarification before writing the review.

Watch the full round before selecting moments

Follow the sequence at normal speed. Note what the customer does well, recurring situations, and changes in control. Watch the lead-up to an exchange, not only its ending. Select moments that relate to the customer’s question.

Separate observations from assumptions

Describe what the footage shows and mark its timestamp. For example: “At 01:12, your opponent moves past your legs.” That is an illustrative observation, not a customer review. If the camera hides a grip or movement, explain that limitation instead of presenting a guess as a fact.

Explain a focused correction

For each selected moment, state what you noticed, what the customer could adjust, and why that adjustment matters. Use clear, respectful language and prioritize a manageable next step. Avoid overwhelming the customer with every possible issue or promising a result.

Suggest a practical drill

Connect the drill to the correction you explained. Describe the starting position, each partner’s role, and when to reset. Keep the suggestion appropriate to the context the customer provided and encourage them to agree on suitable resistance and supervision with their coach or training partner.

Check clarity and respect the footage

Read your feedback alongside the clip: do the timestamps match, and can the customer understand what to practice next? State any uncertainty. Use the footage only for the requested review; do not publish or forward it without the relevant permission.
